Why Dame Helen Mirren Is Awesome: Part 2,304
Here's an interesting quote from the always spectacular Helen Mirren:
Being a sexual object is mortifying and irritating, yet it's giving you power -- an awful power that you've done nothing to deserve, a powerless power. I think some young women fall in love with that power, and it's really objectifying. And when it starts falling away, it's an incredible relief.
I don't really have comments, I just thought it was a cool and though-provoking sentiment.
Comments
I agree with much of what she said -- there's amazing power in the "game" of sex. I don't think that the one who wields the power is an object, though. I believe the reverse is true-- if you have the power of "being desired" - and it is an incredible force!! - then the person who desires you is the object, the one with no or little power; the one who reacts, etc. That's how I see it..... and lived it for a while. But wowee she's right-- it's a delight to be the one who's got all the toys and and calls the shots. It does get old though, it's not substantive. It's just a rush.
But fun.
I think about the yucky situation with my SIL and her daughter, they love this power, they are drunk on it. But SIL is aging and starting to lose it a bit, she feels threatened by her own daughter. I could write a book about them! Haha! I want to age gracefully like Helen. Keeping beauty on her side, and accepting of who she is. Not who she was.
