I agree about the suicide, however, I assume that it comes from the honour culture around code duello, I've never gotten to the bottom of it because every country's code was different, but the idea of honour was counted far more important than life so the idea of trading life for honour was ingrained more into the society of the middle and upper classes.
Makes sense. Well, in a cultural context I guess.

Britain was one of the first of the European powers to develop past that stage - although even in the 19th Century two serving Primeminister's fought Duels. I don't think the suicide thing was big here though, thankfully.
